SUDBURY: William P. “Bill” Stone, 85, died peacefully and comfortably on Saturday, August 9, 2014 following a period of declining health.
He was born in Marlborough on August 1, 1929 the son of the late Ralph W. Stone and Beulah A. (Adams) Stone.
Bill was the beloved husband for 50 years of the late Louise Olive (Thomas) Stone who died on October 30, 2004.
Bill has been a lifelong resident of Sudbury and attended grades 1-4 at the historic “little red schoolhouse” on the Wayside Inn and Martha Mary Chapel property and graduated from Sudbury High School.
With his late wife Louise and his family, he operated Stone Tavern Farm, a roadside farm stand selling corn, produce and flowers on Route 20 that was also well known for hay rides and sleigh rides on the farm.
Bill was also well known throughout the area for the many years he provided his horse drawn carriage rides for brides whose weddings were held at the Martha Mary Chapel in Sudbury. Bill was the driver of the stagecoach for the annual Sudbury 4th of July parade
He and Mrs. Stone were very active members of the Sudbury Companies of Militia and events throughout the town. He loved horseback riding, square dancing and farming his land.
Besides his late wife, Louise, he leaves his children Anne Stone of Sudbury and Deborah E. Stone of Marlborough; his grandchild Patrick J. McCarthy of Sudbury. He was the brother of the late Ralph W. Stone, Jr.
Memorial visitations will be held on Monday, August 18, 2014 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Gibbs Memorial Chapel of the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (Off Rte 30), Wayland.
A Memorial Service celebrating Bill’s life will be held on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Martha Mary Chapel, 72 Wayside Inn Road, Sudbury.
Instead of flowers, his family suggests that memorial donations in Bill’s memory may be sent to Ms. Debi Hogan, Mass. Agriculture in the Classroom, PO BOX 345, Seekonk, MA 02771 or to the charity of the donors choice that benefits animals.
