FRAMINGHAM: Thomas J. “Tommy” O’Reilly, 62, a retired Framingham firefighter, died peacefully and comfortably under the care and comfort of his loving family and friends at his residence on Wednesday morning, July 9, 2014 following a courageous battle with cancer.
Tommy was born in Waltham on July 13, 1951 the son of the late John F. O’Reilly and Mary F. (Kirwan) O’Reilly.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Susan C. (Bennett) O’Reilly of Framingham. Beloved father of Jason T. O’Reilly; Jennifer M. O’Reilly; Patrick M. O’Reilly and Kelly M. O’Reilly all of Framingham and the late Brian E. O’Reilly who died on March 7, 1992. Brother of Maureen A. O’Reilly and her husband George Berube of Falmouth; Timothy F. O’Reilly of Niantic, CT; Kathleen P. Berry and her husband Jack Berry of Framingham; Eileen M. O’Reilly of Framingham and John F. O’Reilly and his wife Renae O’Reilly of Chesterfield, VA. Son-in-law of Charles and Marjorie Bennett of Wayland and brother-in-law of Stephen R. Bennett and his wife Cindy Bennett of Marblehead. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Tommy spent his formative years in Wayland and graduated from Wayland High School with the Class of 1969. He has been a resident of Framingham for over 44 years and retired in January of 2012 after 27 years of dedicated service and commitment to the Town of Framingham as a Firefighter – EMT.
He received his BS in Fire Science from Quinsigamond College in Worcester and for several years served as a Union Past President and member of Local 1652 of Framingham. He served his country honorably with the United States Army as a gunner in a helicopter during the Vietnam War. In his earlier years he was associated with the Wayland House as a waiter and cook. For many years he traveled throughout the area as a restaurant manager for the Ground Round restaurants and helped establish new locations and trained new staff. He was the current founder and owner of T. J. O’Reilly’s Services of Framingham. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed many visits to Chesterfield, VA to golf with family and friends. He loved all the Boston sports teams and was an enthusiastic fan. He loved to play softball and hockey and also spent many hours as a hockey coach in Framingham and Ashland.
Tommy had an infectious smile and would light up a room when he entered and will be remembered as being one of the good guys. We are all a bit better off for having the opportunity to have known and loved Tommy and for all the lives that he touched in his 62 years. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and brother to his family who were the center of this life.
Visitations will be held on Sunday, July 13, 2014 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (Off Rte 30), Wayland.
Family and friends are requested to go directly to his Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, July 14, 2014 at 10:00 am at St. Bridget’s Church, 830 Worcester Rd (Rte 9 E), Framingham.
Interment will follow in the O’Reilly family lot in Lakeview Cemetery in Wayland.
