Laconia------Robert A. Woodman, 84, of 30 County Drive and formerly of Fore St in Lakeport, passed away surrounded by loved ones at the Belknap County Nursing Home on Sunday, June 29, 2014. Mr. Woodman, known as Woody to his friends, was born July 28, 1929, in Laconia, N.H., the only son of the late Arthur L. and Sadie Emma (Pickering) Woodman.
Woody was a lifelong resident of Lakeport. He was very proud to have served with 339th Air Force fighter squadron during the Korean War. During his deployment he was an aircraft mechanic and quickly learned how to speak Japanese. He taught fellow service members the language and enjoyed it so much that he continued to practice it the rest of his life.
He worked for Tekwood, Scott & Williams, the Laconia State School, Tri State Fire Protection and other area businesses before retiring in 2001. He spent most of his free time in the summer fishing and boating. And when he wasn’t working on it, he could be seen riding his yellow moped all over town. His favorite trip was riding it to the Weirs on motorcycle weekend. Using the callsign K1OMC, he communicated with hundreds of people all over the world using Morse code on his ham radio. He enjoyed working on crossword puzzles with friends, and wrote poetry and limericks. At times he referred to himself as a jack of all trades and master of none. But, he had mastered the important things in life and truly appreciated and loved his family, his friends and every single brook, stream, and cove in the lakes region.
He will be missed by all his friends in Lakeport, especially his friends at Lake Village Apartments, the caring staff at the Belknap County Nursing Home and his special friends Jean Durfee and Lisa Landry.
