F. Stowell Alm Born in Medford, Mass. 2/27/1922
Frank Stowell Alm, beloved husband of the late Mary Eleanor (Carroll) Alm passed away at the Epoch Assisted Living Center (Norton, Massachusetts) on Thursday, June 12, 2014. Born in Medford, Massachusetts February 1922. Stowell was the son of Arvid, and Lorna Stowell Alm. He graduated from Medford High School Class of 1940. Enlisted in the Army Air Corp June 15th 1942 and entered the Army Air Corp. at Fort Devens in Ayer, Massachusetts. During his enlistment Stowell was assigned to the 505th Bombardment Group which was stationed on Tinian, in the Marianna Islands where the atomic bombs took off from to end World War II. While in the Army Air Corp. he obtained the rank of Master Sargent as a communications chief. In 1947, Stowell married Eleanor Carroll and lived in Medford until they moved to Concord, Massachusetts in 1960. Stowell and Eleanor resided in Concord until retiring to Naples, Maine in 1983. Stowell began as an Insurance Broker in 1954 with Travelers Insurance. Over the years he purchased insurance agencies and merged his father’s agency with his own when Arvid died in 1961. Stowell sold his Insurance Agency in 1983 (Alm Insurance Agency Chestnut Hill, Ma) and looked to enjoyed his retirement in Maine.
Stowell and Eleanor enjoyed lakeside homes in Bridgeton and Naples, Maine from 1969 until 1987. They enjoyed making friends, playing golf, boating, swimming, enjoying nature and fixing up their homes. The family enjoyed both homes and has strong and lasting memories. Eleanor Alm died of cancer in 1987 which was a great loss to Stowell. Eleanor and Stowell had just completed 40 years of marriage when Eleanor passed away the end of October in 1987.
Loving father of Richard and his companion Lorraine Curry of East Boston, Mass.; Nancy Alm of Mountain City, Texas; Robert and his wife, Anne Hickey Alm, daughter in law of Norton, Mass., and six grandchildren: Marshall Fenton and sister Ashley Fenton (Passed away from cancer in 2003); Caroline and Colleen Alm; and Shirsten, and Meredith Alm.
Stowell volunteered his time and was involved in several service organizations. Member of the Medford Lions Club in the 1950’s and 1960’s. He was President of the Medford Lions Club from 1964-1965 and worked to raise money for eye research. Stowell was an active member of Masons and Shriners in Medford, and Concord, Mass. then stayed active while living in Maine. While residing in Concord he served on the Finance Committee for 3 years. Stowell took great pleasure and pride in being a member of the Concord Minutemen from 1963 until 1983. During his time in the Minutemen he played the fife, and drum in parades, then served as Lieutenant for 3 years, and became Captain of the Minutemen from 1975-1977. He served on the Bicentennial Committee and enjoyed the planning which took several years to coordinate the events including, The Patriots’s Day Ball which was held at the Concord Armory Concord, Massachusetts April 19, 1976. Over the years Stowell and Eleanor made many friends with the Minutemen, and their families which created life long memories.
In 1989, Stowell met Mary B. Armond in Naples, Maine. They became friends and companions from 1989 until Mary died in 2006. Mary has daughters; Anne and Kathryn who have residences in the Lakes Region and were regular visitors to Brandy Pond. During their years together they split their time between Naples, Maine, Southington, Ct (Mary’s Home) and some travel to Destin, Florida in the Winters. They enjoyed travel, golf, friends, family, and relaxation in retirement.
His funeral Service will be celebrated in the Beal’s-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Ave., Medford, Mass. on Saturday, June 28th. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours will be, prior to the service, from 11:30AM to 1 PM. Services at 1PM until 1:45PM. Interment with military honors at Oak Grove Cemetery will be held on Saturday, June 28th, at 2PM.
