Obituary

Henry N. "Butch" Smith Jr., an 8 year resident of Melrose and former 30 year resident of Malden and Everett, entered into eternal life on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at The Sawtelle Family Hospice House in Reading after an 18 month courageous battle with cancer. He was 66 years old.

Butch was born in Everett on March 31, 1948, a son of the late Henry N. Smith and Norma L. (Bird) Smith. He grew up in Everett where he was educated and graduated from Everett High School in 1966. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Meteorology from Lowell Tech and his Masters Degree in Education from Salem State University. Butch worked as a Mathematics Teacher in the City of Boston school system where he taught at the Taft Middle School in Brighton for over 20 years and Boston Latin Academy for 15 years. He retired in 2006 after 36 years of dedicated service to the City of Boston. Butch enjoyed coaching Malden Little League Baseball for many years. He loved gardening and was especially proud of his home grown tomatoes. He enjoyed the outdoors especially water skiing, snow skiing, bird watching and his beloved dogs. He enjoyed traveling to Berwick, Maine and Lake Bauneg Beg since he was a little kid. Most of all in his life he enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren and their everyday activities that he was able to experience with each one of them.

Butch is the beloved husband of 46 years to Mary C. (Tennant) Smith. He is the devoted father of Robert C. Smith and his wife Jenna of East Bridgewater, Gregory D. Smith and his wife Tonya of East Bridgewater and Christine E. Smith and her husband Russell Bryan of Bedford. He is the loving Grampy to Ashley, Jordan, Marcus, Tia, Derek, Zachary, Kirsten, Katie, Kerrin, Rebecca, James and his great-grandchildren Anya and Kaleb. He is the beloved brother of Brian Smith of Lebanon, Maine and the late Raymond Smith.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Butch's Funeral on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at 9 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 1159 Main St. Melrose followed by his Funeral Mass in the Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St. Wakefield at 10 A.M. Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Wakefield. Visiting hours will be on Monday, June 16, 2014 from 4 to 8 P.M. in the funeral home.
