Bernard L. "Ben" Doherty, a 39 year resident of Medford and formerly of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at his home in Medford following an extended illness. He was 83 years old.
Ben was born in Charlestown on August 11, 1930, a son of the late Bernard Doherty and Rose (Gibbons) Doherty. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated at St. Mary's Parochial School and graduated from Commerce High School in Boston in 1947. Ben enlisted into the United States Army on March 16, 1951 and served his country with courage and pride during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged on November 7, 1952 with the rank of Sergeant. Following his discharge from the Army in 1952, Ben began working for New England Telephone Company and retired in 1985 as a Manager after 33 years of dedicated service. He was a member of the Old Charlestown Schoolboy's Association and The Telephone Pioneers of America. Ben's passion in life was his grandchildren and the many activities he was able to be involved with them.
Ben is the beloved husband of 62 years to Margaret M. (Eldridge) Doherty. He is the devoted father of Paul Doherty and his wife Cindy, Bernard L. Doherty Jr. and his wife Marta, Marie Doherty, Neil Doherty and his wife Kathy and also Ceci Doherty. He is the loving Papa to Terrence, Caitlin, Mary, Jimmy, Christine, Sheila, Ryan and Connor.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Ben's Funeral on Friday, June 13, 2014 at 10 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown at 11 A.M. Burial will be at the Veterans Administration National Cemetery in Bourne at 1:45 P.M. Visiting hours Thursday, June 12, 2014 from 4 to 8 P.M. in the funeral home.
