Obituary


Evelyn M. (Dighton) Bloom, 88, passed away surrounded by her loving family Saturday, May 31, 2014. Her husband of 65 years, William A. Bloom, died in February. She leaves a son and two daughters and their husbands, William A. Bloom, Jr., Claudia and George Lloyd, and Paula and Patrick McAdam with whom she lived - all of Shrewsbury. She also leaves 4 grandchildren, Jessica Mara and her husband Saimir of Shrewsbury, Gregory Lloyd of Stamford, CT, Kristin Johansson and her husband Stefan of Shrewsbury, and Patrick McAdam of Shrewsbury; 3 step-grandchildren, Tara Kassal and her husband Mark of New York, NY, Shannon Wall and her husband Graham of Shrewsbury, and Kerrie Topi and her husband Tony of Shrewsbury; 1 great-granddaughter, Maeve Mara; 4 step-great-grandchildren, Kelton and Brendan Topi, and Gabrielle and Laird Kassal. She also leaves her sister-in-law, Christine Bloom, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, William Dighton, and sister, Myrtle Lewis.

Evelyn was born in Worcester, daughter of Harry and Marion (Burr) Dighton. She was a graduate of Shrewsbury High School, where in her yearbook it was written: "Studies never bothered Evie. She is one of those intelligent girls whom not even the hardest thing troubles”. As a young adult, she was a member of the Worcester Chorus. She worked for many years as an office clerk at Kings Department Store in Shrewsbury. Evelyn enjoyed sewing and quilting. After retirement, she spent her time lovingly taking care of her grandchildren. She always enjoyed cooking and made Sunday dinners for her children and grandchildren into her eighties. She was a member of the Shrewsbury Senior Center where she enjoyed playing bridge. She was also an avid Red Sox fan. She was very interested in her family ancestry which is traced back to England in the 1400s. More recently, Evelyn also enjoyed playing Words with Friends.

Funeral services will be held Weds., June 4, at Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St., Worcester. A calling hour will be held from 9-10am followed by the service at 10am. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shrewsbury Senior Center, 98 Maple Ave., Shrewsbury, MA 01545.
