Albert J. Michaud
5/10/2014

Albert J. Michaud, 89, of Lakeville, MA and Naples, FL died peacefully at home on May 10, 2014 after a brief illness.
He was born in Fall River, MA, a son of the late Arthur and Delphine (Mercier) Michaud. He graduated from B.M.C. Durfee High School in 1942, then received a Bachelor’s degree from Providence College and a Master’s from Boston University. He married the late Claire Gauthier in 1948, and they lived together in the Fall River area until 1991, when they purchased a winter home in Florida.
Albert had three careers, all in non-profit sectors. For 17 years he taught in Fall River, MA and Barrington, RI public schools where he is still fondly remembered by his students. Then followed 10-year stints as Executive Director of the Southeastern MA United Way, and as president and CEO of his beloved Saint Anne’s Credit Union.
Albert was a proud and decorated combat veteran of WW II; captured at the Battle of the Bulge in 1944, he spent the next six months in a German POW camp. The holder of a purple heart and a bronze star, he was recently made a Chevalier (knight) of the French Legion of Honor, France’s highest military distinction, for his service in the liberation of France.
Albert was a daily communicant at St. Bernard’s Church in Assonet, MA and St. Finbarr’s in Naples, FL for many years. He was one of the founders of the BCC Foundation, past president of the Fall River Rotary Club, active in the Knights of Columbus and many other civic organizations, and was a long-time member of the Saint Anne’s Credit Union Board of Directors. He loved to travel, to read, and, most of all, to meet and talk with friends new and old.
Albert is survived by three children: Denise Haskins and Stefan Michaud of Lakeville, MA and Chris Michaud of Brooklyn, NY. He was the brother of Leona Thompson of Middleboro, MA. He leaves three grandchildren: Veronica (Haskins) Correia of Fall River, MA and Monique and Ross Michaud of Lakeville, MA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made out to the Sisters of Saint Francis of Assisi for their school in Haiti. Checks can be sent to St. Finbarr Church, c/o Fr. Fritz, 13520 Tamiami Trail, Naples, FL 34114. There will be no wake but SOUTH COAST FUNERAL HOME is arranging a Memorial Mass to be held at St. Bernard’s Church on 30 South Main St. in Assonet, MA at 11 AM on Friday, May 30.
