METHUEN - John F. "Spud" Murphy, 94 of Methuen, passed away peacefully Monday May 12, 2014 at the Nevins Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Methuen with his loving family by his side.
Born and educated in Lawrence, MA, he was the son of John and Ellen (Sullivan) Murphy and was a graduate of Lawrence High School. During World War II "Spud" served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged from service. For many years Spud worked for JJ Cronin and Son Oil and retired as a security guard at Textron in Wilmington, MA
John was a communicant of St. Monica's Church in Methuen and for more than 25 years served as an usher at the 4:00 Mass on Saturday's and the Tuesday Novena. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending all their events.
The widower of Rita A. (Abbott) Murphy, he is survived by his childen, Patricia Duphily and her husband Victor of Methuen, MA, Mary Ann Cavallaro and her husband Mario of Derry, NH, Doreen Adair and her husband Jeffrey also of Methuen and John Murphy of Lawrence, MA; one daughter-in-law Elizabeth Donahue of Methuen; 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
John was predeceased by his son William Donahue and daughter-in-law Patricia Murphy and also two brothers, Joseph and Timothy; two sisters Catherine and Mary Murphy, a granddaughter Ashley Cavallaro and great-granddaughter Mia Daley.
ARRANGMENTS: Visiting hours for family and friends will be Thursday from 3:00p.m. - 7:00p.m. at the Kenneth H. Pollard Funeral Home, Inc., 233 Lawrence Street Methuen, MA 01844. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 11:00a.m. in St. Monica's Church in Methuen with burial to follow in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Lawrence, MA.
