William Serlie Sherrill, Jr.

Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014, Mr. William S. Sherrill, Jr., 86, husband of 59 years to Elizabeth “Betty” Norvell Sherrill.
Mr. Sherrill was a native of Montgomery, AL but lived in Augusta since 1960.
He was a graduate of Sidney Lanier High School and attended the University of Alabama. He was a 1949 graduate of Huntingdon College in Montgomery. Following college he served in the US Army until 1953. He was President of Norvell Fixture & Equipment Company. He was a member of Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church; he had been Chairman of the Board of Stewards, Commission on Evangelism, President of Methodist Men, President of two Sunday School classes as well as teacher in the adult department.

Along with others, Mr. Sherrill formed the Young Republican Club. He later became President in 1964 of the Richmond County Republican Party.

He was a former member of West Lake Country Club where he was a competitive tennis player.

He was a former member of the Augusta Kiwanis Club and an advisor to the Key Club at the Academy of Richmond County

Bill and Betty were avid travelers having toured 109 foreign countries and every state in the United States.

They were avid supporters of Augusta State University where together they established the SCOPE scholarship. At this time 110 scholarships have allowed students to complete their degree after their sports scholarship expired.

Family members in addition to his wife include son: William Sherrill, III of Augusta; daughters: Lisa Futrelle (Jeff) of Augusta, Lela Sherrill of Columbus, MS, Louise Garren (Joe) of Augusta; grandchildren: Franklin Futrelle (Jessica) and Elizabeth Futrelle Burke (Brad); and one great grandchild: William Jackson Burke. He was preceded in death by his parents: Herd and William Sherrill; daughter-in-law: Denise Anderson Sherrill and his grandson: William Sherrill, IV.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church with Dr. Mike Cash and Rev. Greg Hatfield officiating. Interment will follow in the Walker Family Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers will be Shirley and Carl Darby, Eleanor and Felix Patrick, Louise and Dan Cook and Martha and Arthur Balk.

The family wishes to express thanks to Leon Lewis, Richarddeen Brown, Herman Jenkins and University Hospice for their special care.
