Obituary

Mary Louise Vaughn Vallotton passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at her home in Augusta. A graveside service for Mrs. Vallotton, wife of J. Maxwell Vallotton, will be conducted at Westover Memorial Park, Wednesday, April 16th at 11:30 A.M. Drs. R. Leslie Holmes, G. Daniel McCall and Matthew A. Rich will be officiating. Mrs. Vallotton was the daughter of the late James Carleton Vaughn and Mary Elizabeth Davenport Vaughn of North Augusta, South Carolina. She attended public school in North Augusta and was a 1962 graduate of North Augusta High. Mrs. Vallotton graduated with honors from Converse College in 1966 with a degree in English. While at Converse, she was a Converse Scholar, Who’s Who in American College and Universities, and Student Body President. She most enjoyed studying abroad at the University of Edinburgh.

Mrs. Vallotton was a wonderful wife, mother and community volunteer. She was active in the Junior League of Augusta, serving as Chairman of Tea Time of the Masters the year it was first published, and later serving as President. She also served as Chairman of the Cotillion for the Augusta Symphony Guild, President of the Board of the Office of Volunteer Services for the State of Georgia, Chairman of the Department of Family and Children’s Services Board, and a member of the State Board for the Prevention of Blindness. Mrs. Vallotton was Chairman of the Augusta Red Cross and later a recipient of the Mary Lou Reynolds Award for volunteer service and an honorary life member of the Red Cross. She served as a member of the Chamber of Commerce Board, and Town Chairman of the Augusta Chapter of the Colonial Dames of America. She received the Women in Excellence Award for Community Service and was an organizing member of Leadership Augusta and later a graduate of Leadership Georgia. Additionally, she served on the Episcopal Day School Board, President of the Augusta Prep Parents Association Board and a member of the Board of Trustees. For years she was an adult Sunday school teacher at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church.

She loved to travel, read and fish with Maxwell. Her family includes a daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth and Jim Yarbrough of Greenville, SC; a son and daughter-in-law Max and Allison Vallotton of Augusta and five Grandchildren Jim, Mary Louise, Joe Yarbrough and Victoria and William Vallotton. A brother and sister-in-law, Carleton and Billie Vaughn of Augusta; a sister and brother-in-law Drs. Elizabeth and Kenneth Sharpe of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and, sister-in-law Susan and brother-in-law Lawton Jordan of Augusta. She had many beloved nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are William L. Clark, Lamar L. Fleming, Charles J. Goodwin, Harry T. Harper, Richard L. Magruder, Samuel F. Maguire, John D. Reynolds and Robin W. Schilling.
