Edith J. Champagne, loving mother and grandmother died Thursday, March 27th just one week after her 94th birthday. She was the wife of the late Ralph Champagne to whom she was married for sixty-six years prior to his death.
She was born in Woonsocket, one of eight children, and was a daughter of the late Ludger and Lumina (Lozeau) Poirier. She was an assembler for A.T. Cross Co. for several years retiring in 1986, and was a member of the St. Joseph’s Sr. Citizens.
Edith was a devoted Boston Red Sox fan. She loved listening to Andrea Bocelli and Liberace, and was a devoted member of the Liberace fan club. She had an adventurous side and loved to travel visiting her children in Wisconsin, Arkansas, Florida and Texas, but her favorite trip was to Hawaii. When she lived at home, she loved to spend time with her family admiring her grandchildren and how they loved their Memere! She was a wonderful mother and we will miss her great sense of humor and her loving spirit though we know she will always walk by our side.
She is survived by nine children; Ralph Champagne of Woonsocket, Daniel Champagne of Sarasota, FL, Donald Champagne of Smithfield, Dennis Champagne of Goshen AK, Andre Champagne of N. Smithfield, and Gerald Champagne of Woonsocket, three daughters; Suzanne Laprade of Kenosha, WI, Diane Willey of Plainville, MA, and Joanne DiOrio of Johnston, twenty five grandchildren, thirty one great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late Richard Champagne and sister of the late Daniel, Henry, Edmond, and Armand Poirier, Violet Archambault, Lillian Chapdelaine, and Beatrice Beaudoin.
Her funeral will be held Tuesday at 9:30 from the Fournier & Fournier Funeral Home, 99 Cumberland St, Woonsocket, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 in St. Joseph’s Church, Mendon Rd Woonsocket. Burial will follow in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery, Bellingham. Visiting hours will be Monday 4-7PM.
