Obituary

William A. Bloom, 93, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Thurs., Feb. 27, 2014. He leaves his wife of 65 years, Evelyn (Dighton) Bloom; a son and two daughters and their husbands, William A. Bloom, Jr., Claudia and George Lloyd, and Paula and Patrick McAdam with whom he lived, all of Shrewsbury. He also leaves 4 grandchildren, Jessica Mara and her husband Saimir of Shrewsbury, Gregory Lloyd of Stamford Connecticut, Kristin Johansson and her husband Stefan of Shrewsbury and Patrick McAdam of Shrewsbury; 3 step-grandchildren, Tara Kassal and her husband Mark of New York, New York, Shannon Wall and her husband Graham of Shrewsbury, and Kerrie Topi and her husband Tony of Shrewsbury; 1 great-grandchild, Maeve Mara; 4 step-great grandchildren, Kelton and Brendan Topi, and Gabrielle and Laird Kassal. He also leaves several nieces and nephews, his sister in law Christine Bloom, and also his dedicated care-giver, Steve. He was predeceased by his brother, Raymond Bloom.

Bill was born in Worcester, son of Bror and Emily (Skogsberg) Bloom, who emigrated from Sweden. He lived in the Quinsigamond Village area of Worcester, graduating from Worcester Boys Trade High School. When he married in 1949 he moved to Shrewsbury and lived there the remainder of his life.

He was a WWII Navy veteran serving on board the USS Ingersoll destroyer which saw action in the South Pacific including the Battle of Leyte Gulf and Okinawa. He was also in Tokyo Bay during the Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri and participated as a peacekeeper in the US occupational forces during the transition of power. He was a member of VFW Post 3657 and American Legion Post 397. He worked at U.S. Steel, for 35 years. After retiring, Bill enjoyed helping with the care of his grandchildren along with his wife. He was a member of the Shrewsbury Senior Center Men's Club and the Steel Workers Organization of Active Retirees.

As a boy and later with his own family, he enjoyed fishing, boating, and swimming at their camp on Lake Singletary in Sutton, MA. He spent many hours gardening and watching sports especially football and baseball.

Funeral services will be held Tues., March 4, at Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St., Worcester. A calling hour will be held from 9-10 a.m. followed by the service at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
