Ksenia (Belyakova) Pokrovsky, 71 of Sharon, internationally known iconographer, died unexpectedly, Sunday, July 7, 2013 at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was the wife of Lev A. Pokrovsky.
Born in Kyrgystan on March 9, 1941 and raised in Moscow, Ksenia was greatly influenced by her aunt in the arts, literature, and in orthodox liturgies. She and Lev married in 1960 while attending the University of Moscow and in 1966 she received her degree in Bio Physics. Following university, Ksenia began studying and writing icons. She left science because she felt that science would not answer her questions and church and faith would ultimately come closer to the answers. Over time she developed her art in the restoration, and in some instances the reconstruction of great early icons. By 1968 she left the field of bio physics, and with the blessings of Father Alexander Men, embarked on her true vocation as a full time iconographer.
In 1991 she and her family came to the United States and shortly after she formed her Izograph Studio she began writing icons for private commissions. Among her many accomplishments was the complete interior design of St. Andrew Antiochian Orthodox Church in Lexington, KY, as well as St. Mary Magdalene Church in Manhattan. She was the writer of the renowned icon, Synaxis of All Saints Who Have Shone Forth In North America currently in the collection of the Orthodox Church of America Synod. Her icons are held in many private collections around the world.
In addition to her husband Lev, she is survived by three sons and a daughter, Eugene Pokrovsky of Moscow, Anna Gouriev of Sharon, Nikolay Pokrovsky of Norwood, Ilya Pokrovsky of Stoughton, two brothers, Eugene Shpitalsky of Washington, DC and Igor Belyakov of Lynn. She also leaves her 10 beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as her many devoted students and friends. She was predeceased by her son Dimitry Pokrovsky who passed away in 2001.
Her funeral service will be on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at 7:00 P.M. in St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 64 Forrester St., Salem followed by visiting hours until 9:00 P.M.
