Obituary

Methuen, MA – Edward Warren “Ed” Hays, 93, died on June 5, 2013 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

Ed was born in Glenville, West Virginia, the son of Dr. D. C. Hays and Edna Mearns Hays. Ed entered the US Marine Corps in 1938 and was assigned to the Panama Canal Zone as a member of the ‘Banana Fleet Marines”. He served in the South Pacific during WWII in Guam and the Philippine Islands. After the war he attended Boston University and was a top salesman for Electrolux Vacuum Company. In 1957 he started the Hays Insurance Agency in Methuen and served as President until his retirement in 2000.

He enjoyed traveling to his beach house at Moody Beach, Maine and Hutchinson Island, Florida. He loved watching Boston sports teams and his Monday night card games. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, the John Hancock Masonic Lodge AF & AM of Methuen for over 50 years. He was also a member of the York County Shrine and the Lowell Scottish Rites and was also a member of the Methuen Board of Trade.

He was the widower of Althea ‘Judy’ Aspinall Hays and the father of the late Carolyn A. Hays.

Mr. Hays is survived by his children Edward ‘Ted’ Hays and his wife Gudrun, and a daughter E. Jane Cronin and her companion Patrick Music and grandchildren Carolyn Hays Furbush and her husband James, Erik Hays and his wife Nahil Dunn Hays, Kathleen Cronin Pare and her husband Frankie and Colleen Cronin and great grandchildren Brittany Boucher and her husband Matt, Brett Thomas, Christyna Walsh, Aidan Hays, Jacob Hays, Connor Furbush, Benjamin and Brooklyn Pare and great great grandchildren Bryce Murray and Chase Boucher.

He will be missed by all who knew him. He was a true gentleman.

Funeral services will take place on Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock from the Kenneth H. Pollard Funeral Home, 233 Lawrence St., Methuen with burial to follow in the Elmwood Cemetery. Friends will be warmly received on Monday from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Members of John Hancock Lodge AF & AM will meet at the funeral home Monday evening at 7:30 for Masonic services.
