Charles B. Webster
Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Saturday, November 10, 2012, Charles Bezz Webster, beloved husband of the late Francis W. Webster. Other family members include his sister, Grace Sonnenschein, companion Virginia Seago, nephews: Ricky Sonnenschein, Tommy Sonnenschein, Larry Norris, Billy Norris, Jimmy Webster, Scotty Webster and Holley Watkins, nieces: Sandy Brooks and Nancy Jones.
Sheriff Webster was a native of Wheeler County. He graduated from Jordan High School in Columbus, GA. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict in 1956. He joined the Georgia Department of Revenue, Alcohol, and Tax Unit as a Revenue Agent and retired after 28 years. Mr. Webster was elected Sheriff of Richmond County in 1984 and served his county for 17 years. He was an instructor in the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council. Sheriff Webster was a member of the Peace Officers Association of Georgia, the Shrine Club, the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, the Fleming Lodge # 718, F&AM, the American Legion and the VFW. He was a former member of the Georgia Department of Corrections where he served 2 years as Secretary, Vice-Chairman, and Chairman.
He loved people and never met a stranger which made politics very easy for him. One might say politics was his passion.
When he was not working, he could be found at the nearest fishing hole or the dove field. He taught many young people how to fish, hunt and enjoy the outdoors. He was a true sportsman.
Charlie Webster first ran for office to fill the vacancy in the office of Sheriff in the Special Election held on January 31, 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1996. He served as Sheriff from February 1984 – December 31, 2000.
Sheriff Webster was a man that loved his family, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and his country. People in the community and elected officials enjoyed his fish fry dinners as well as the barbecue chicken dinners. One of the ways he will be remembered is as the “cooking Sheriff”.
As sheriff, he took great pride in the building and developing of the CSRA Law Enforcement Training Center. In 1987, he constructed the training facility that is one of the best in Georgia.
He was instrumental in the construction of the jail on Phinizy Road in 1997, which was named The Charles B. Webster Detention Center in his honor in March, 2004.
He spent his life helping people that could not help themselves, never asking for anything in return. This was known by all that knew him and will be a part of his legacy.
He stayed in the shadows of many achievements in Richmond County while others received credit. The many things he did never went unnoticed by the citizens he served so proudly. And he will be missed by all.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. in Westover Memorial Park with Rev. Jerry Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Thomas Poteet & Son.
Pallbearers will be Sheriff Ronnie Strength, Freddie Sanders, Duncan Fordham, Lee Ready, Gene Johnson, Jimmy Drew, Kenny Miles, Homer Moxley, Jr.,
Honorary pallbearers will be John Hardin, Judge William Fleming, Judge Danny Craig, Joel Avery, Felix Patrick, Jimmy Norris, Whitey Lester, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and members of the Georgia Sheriff’s Association.
