Obituary

age 85, of Natick, a retired educator and guidance counselor, died early Friday morning, March 23, 2012, at Miriam Boyd Parlin Residence in Wayland. He was the devoted husband of the late Marianne (Nelson) Carlow.

Born, raised and educated in North Adams, he was a son of the late James P. and Anna E. (McConnell) Carlow. He was a 1944 graduate of Drury High School and then served with the Army as a Sergeant in Central Europe and the Rhineland during World War II. John then continued his education at Tufts University earning a Bachelor’s Degree in History. After re-enlisting and serving stateside during the Korean War, he returned to Tufts and completed his Master of Education.

John and Marianne were married on August 14, 1954, and the couple settled in Natick where he had accepted a position as a history teacher at the new high school. After several years teaching in Natick he became a guidance counselor, first in Framingham, and then for many years at the Algonquin Regional High School. He retired as Algonquin’s Director of Guidance 1995. An enthusiastic tennis player and sports fan, John enjoyed coaching students in various capacities throughout his career. He could often be found reading history and listening to jazz.

He is survived by his son, James P. Carlow of Clinton; his daughter, Anne-Marie Shea and husband Matt of West Chester, PA; four grandchildren, Abigail, Ellen, Shane, and Jacqueline; and a sister-in-law, S. Helene Nagle, SSJ, of Charlotte, NC. He was also the brother of the late James W. Carlow.

His funeral will be from the John Everett & Son Funeral Home, 4 Park Street (at Natick Common) Natick, on Monday, March 26th at 8:00a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Linus Church, 119 Hartford Street, Natick, at 9:00a.m. Burial will follow at Saint Patrick Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be on Sunday, 3 – 6p.m. Donations may be made in John’s memory to the Natick VNA, 209 W. Central St., Natick, MA 01760.
