Paul V. Shalline, 86, of Wayland died unexpectedly on March 18, 2012 at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

He was born in the family residence in Somerville on April 22, 1925 the son of the late Erik Shalline and Mable (Olson) Shalline.

Paul is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years Jean A. (Barr) Shalline of Wayland, and beloved children Paul G. Shalline and his wife Susan of North Fort Myers, FL and Robin Gail Shalline and her husband Jere Urban of Monkton, VT.

Paul leaves 4 grandchildren. Jason Shalline of North Fort Myers, FL, Christopher Urban and his wife Mara of Lincoln, VT., Anna Urban of Jonesville, VT, and Cameron Urban of San Francisco, CA. He was anxiously awaiting the birth of his first great-grandchild to be born in April. He also leaves a brother, Robert Shalline and his wife Barbara of South Yarmouth, MA, Jack and Janet Barr brother and sister in law from Rhode Island, and was pre deceased by his sister, the late Jean Kish. He is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews and close family friends Robert and Lillian Mills of Wayland.

Paul had been a resident of Wayland for the past 56 years, and spent all of his growing up years in Somerville, MA. He was a graduate of Somerville High School and served his country proudly with the United States Navy on the U.S.S Hilbert, a naval destroyer escort ship in the South Pacific during World War II. He was an active participant in the reunions held for the U.S.S Hilbert and was also a member of the D.S Sailors Assoc. He retired after many years of dedicated service in 1985 from the W.R. Grace Company in Woburn, MA.

Paul loved to play golf, sail, garden and putter. He remained active with his grand children sledding, beating them at ping pong and wiffle ball and was forever young. Paul was a generous and kind hearted man who was loved and admired by many. Those who knew him often spoke of his generosity, his willingness to help others, and his ability to make-do. He will be fondly remembered by neighbors, friends and family for always lending a helping hand.

At the request of his family, there will be no visiting hours. A Celebration of his Life will be held on Monday, March 26, 2012 at 11:00 o’clock at the Trinitarian Congregational Church, 53 Cochituate Road (Rte 27), Wayland. Private family interment will take place in the Shalline-Barr family lot in North Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, his family suggests that memorial gifts in Paul’s memory may be sent to The American Red Cross of Eastern MA, Financial Development, 139 Main St, Cambridge, MA 02142
