Anita A. (Benoit) Gonsalves 91, of Provincetown died Thursday October 27, 2011 at Seashore Point in Provincetown after a period of declining health. She was the wife of the late Fernando Gonsalves who died in 1996. Mrs. Gonsalves was born in Fairhaven, MA on August 7, 1920, the daughter of the late George and Loella (Howes) Benoit. She lived in New Bedford in the 1940s and following her marriage she moved to Provincetown. During the 1950s she worked at the Anchorage Motel and then the Malchman's Department Store in the early '70s. But most of her working career was spent at Adams Pharmacy in Provincetown retiring in 2003. She was active in her church and her community. She was a devoted member of the Provincetown United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women's club and she was also a member of the Business and Professional Women's club of Provincetown. She is survived by 3 of her children, including her son David Gonsalves and his wife Martha of Framingham, his daughter Donna Johnson and her husband Maynard of Scituate, her daughter Betty White and her husband John of Truro, and her son in law Greig Johnson Jr. of Marstons Mills. She was also the mother of the late Christine Johnson who died in 1998 and the sister of the late Ernest Benoit She was the grandmother of 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson.
Visiting hours are Monday from 4:00 to 6:00pm at the Gately-McHoul Funeral Home 94 Harry Kemp Way Provincetown. A Funeral Service will take place on Tuesday November 1, at 10:00am in the Provincetown United Methodist Church 20 Shank Painter Rd. Provincetown. Internment will follow in the Provincetown Cemetery.
