Joanne and family: I am so sorry for your loss. Joe was such a wonderful friend to me in college--even back then his greatest desire was to be a family man. I have so many happy memories of Joe: him getting me my very first job in broadcast TV almost 30 years ago in Providence, me being the Oscar roommate to his Felix, working together at WLNE (and later WCVB), closing Christopher's with the gang-- most of all, laughing. My thoughts and prayers are with you all-- he brought sunshine into every room he walked into.

Thinking of all of you and remembering Joe for the fine man, friend, husband, and father he was. Miss him so. May you be comforted by the memories of who he was and all he meant to so many people. Heartbreaking. With deepest sympathies, Anthony Everett

My prayers go out to the whole Roche family. I met Joe one Halloween when he came trick or treating with one of the boys. The little guy was dressed as a Bruin player. We had a nice friendly chat on Elmwood Court. I could tell what a loving father he was. Sincere sympathy. Mary and Mark Obrien

Our hearts and thoughts go out to Joe's family and friends. Joe was a kind and compassionate man. Even though Joe worked for the "competition" during my Boston TV News years, he was still a friend who helped on more than one occasion. It may be a cliche to say he left us too young, but it's the truth. Joe was the best! Garry and Marilyn Armstrong

Joanne - know that all of Channel Five, to a person, is thinking of you and your beautiful family today. Our hearts are broken for your loss, as well as ours. Brendan, Conor, Ryan and Chiara...we miss your father's merriment as I'm sure all of you do as well. His laugh, his smile and of course his endless sense of humor were a gift to everyone who knew him. Thank goodness he has all of you to keep that legacy alive. God bless.

Joe was one of the most generous, funny and smart people. I had the opportunity to overlap with him in the crazy news business that we both loved so much. He always would say hello if I saw him at events and he always had a kind word to share. As assignment editors we bonded - as only that group can. The difficult calls, the hard stories to tell and the "newsroom gossip" always was shared with a smile. After The Station Fire in RI he was one of the first to reach out even though we were at "the competition." To Joe, it was about friendship first. I brought his name up numerous times in my classes here at Emerson as one of their own and one of the best in the business. I still will. His legacy lives on here at Emerson and through his wonderful family. Rest in peace my friend.

To the Roche Family, Please know that you are all in our thoughts at this difficult time. I knew Joe as a young man when we first hired him at WCVB as a Desk Assistant and bringing him to WCVB was a blessing on so many levels. He contributed so much over the many years I worked with him through his intelligence, caring and real understanding of news. It was Channel 5 that was the real winner in this relationship. Please know that he touched so many people with his kindness and that image remains with all of us. Candy Altman and Joe Bergantino

I knew Joe when I was in College and had not had a thought about it. I was looking something up on the Emerson College website and there he was. Joe was one of the nicest people I can remember spending time with. We took a lecture class together in one of the churches in Back Bay. We met and sat together. He lived in his own apartment in the South End before gentrification. We walked lots of places together because we had no cars. I just want to say that he was a great person. I wish I could do something for his kids. I will try.

Joanne, Brendan, Conor, Ryan, Chiara - We were beyond saddened to hear of the passing of Joe / your dad. Joe will always be one of Mansfield's finest! Joe had the ability to keep things in perspective and let things roll of his back with a smile and a laugh. I admired that in Joe. If we can ever help with anything always let us know. Joe will be greatly missed in the Mansfield community. He has left a wonderful family behind. Sincerely, Eric & Jackie Swansburg & family.
