Stephen M. Birdsall age 65 of Brockton died unexpectedly Sunday May 19, 2013 at Boston Medical Center after a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Jo-Ann (Donovan) Birdsall, his high school sweetheart and the love of his life. Stephen was born in Des Moines, Iowa a son of the late John Vujnovich and Martha (Serbian) Leach and lived in Brockton for most of his life. A 1966 graduate of Brockton High School, Stephen also received his degree from Bridgewater State College in 1970.
Stephen began a lengthy career with the US Postal Service as a letter carrier and retired as a supervisor of postal operations and assistant postmaster in the Whitman Post Office. In his retirement he had worked for IKEA in Stoughton.
Stephen was passionate about music and attending concerts especially the Rolling Stones. He also enjoyed running, Boston sports and playing cards with his brothers-in-law and friends. His true joy in life was spending time with his wife and family.
In addition to his wife he leaves his children Eric M. Birdsall of Brockton and Jenna L. Birdsall of Milford. He was the brother of Cristy Brewer of Redondo Beach, CA; Janis Krechter of Encinitas, CA; John Vujnovich and Louise Slack both of Des Moines, Iowa. He also leaves his sisters-in-law Mary Paris wife of the late David of Halifax, Deborah Pullia and her husband Salvatore of Brockton, Patricia MacKinnon and her husband Hugh of Bridgewater and Nancy Kerrigan and her husband Paul of Hanson. He was the beloved son-in-law of Mary P. Donovan of Brockton and leaves many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont St. (Rte 123) Brockton on Thursday 4-8 pm. The procession will gather at the funeral home on Friday at 9:30 am followed by a funeral Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 10:30 am. Burial in Calvary Cemetery.
