CONDOLENCES (GuestBook)

Dear Elaine and Leslie It is with profound sorrow that I saw that Ed passed. He was my closest friend while working at Chicopee and after. I will always treasure how he and you allowed me to join your friends in the ski trips at the Balsams and sailing on his beloved Thistle at Otis. The memories are in the hundreds - cellar hole discovery in the woods surrounding Otis, being reminded about how Arnold always told Ed to "Think, Eddie, Think. - to discussing Volvo's - and countless others. We had a very close and vivid time together recently when Ed drove to Lake George to spend a couple days. Ed had spent time in his youth on the lake and knew much about it's history and had camped on several of the islands. There is a bay - Paradise Bay - in the northern part of the lake we drifted in. Ed was delighted to drift and talk and reminisce. He recalled being there, probably a half-century, before. We sat on the end of the boat and attracted some ducks to come to us with crackers. Ed marveled at the resplendent striking blue color of the underwing. He recalled seeing them in the past. To some, this may seem like a small remembrance, but this was what Ed always meant to me. He would always have a unique, intense, and quiet manner and talent. His interests were so varied it was hard to keep up with his discussions; whether the history of Springfield and the Berkshires, his previous employment in Holyoke, his various projects after moving from Stereotype Foreman to being responsible for a myriad of projects in this later career, his senior skiing victories, his stories about his boyhood friends, some of whom I had the pleasure to meet. I had the pleasure of working with his brothers and see their similarities - hard work, smart, loyal to work and family - although Ed talked more. I know that Ed will be missed by Elaine and Leslie. They had a gifted life together - with the same joys and heartaches shared by all of us. Whether it was the eternal debate of staying in their house in Fairview or building somewhere else, or whether Elaine would cut down on her smoking, it was done in the context of staying together for over 60 years of marriage. A wonderful accomplishment and something to be honored. It certainly has been my honor to have known Ed to a greater degree than I have with most others. He has always been dear to me and in my mind and since the last visit with him I felt that someday soon I would receive a note of his passing. I know where Ed is now and I am pleased. Bill

Dear Elaine (and brother Don), I'm sorry to hear about Ed's passing. You're in my thoughts and prayers at this sad time. I worked with Ed for many years at Dow Jones and I have to say he was quite a guy in all respects. God Bless.

Ed was the most genuine, honest, humble and FUNNY man with whom I've had the pleasure of working. I remember one night on the road after a few libations (ahem!), we have a great time trying to say each others names BACKWARDS. He brought calm in chaos and humor in times of stress. Rest in peace, my friend!
