Jerry was my friend and mentor. When I first met Jerry in 1982, we had a heated discussion about the legal underpinnings of affirmative action. We became lunch buddies after that because having a friend who challenges you in the best way is a great and rare thing- it makes you better. He visited my class and helped me become the teacher I am. He could give criticism in a constructive way because he wanted you to be the best and he believed you could get there. We were an unlikely pair, with the exception of sharing a UPenn heritage, but our friendship grew in unexpected ways. He was instrumental in my career – always giving me the wisest advice- counseling me in so many things including how to navigate the shoals of campus politics. But over time our friendship added new dimensions. We shared child rearing advice, travel and when he became a caregiver for Pat, we shared recipes. Who knew such a distinguished fellow would take on the role of chef with the same gusto as publishing? When he came to visit at the Cape for a meeting, we went to Mass at the chapel by the sea. We shared the difficulties of caring for loved ones with illness and the sadness of their passing. We both changed our positions on the death penalty over the course of our friendship. We delighted in discussing the tough issues of the times. Jerry was a good man- a truly learned man who cared deeply about what was right. He was a good friend and mentor who made a great difference in my life. I will miss him. Prof. Beverley Earle, Bentley University
