Just received Franks memorial card in the post and it brought tears to my eyes. Time is passing us all by so quickly and our legacies are now left to our children & grandchildren to continue. I began to reminisce of the good old days I spent with Frank, both in Ireland and the US. My ”travelling buddy” as I like to refer to him as. When I, Marie and the kids went to America back in the 80’s, Frank & Kathy looked after us very well. Taking us to all the tourist attractions and kindly giving us accommodation in their beautiful home. I remember one day in particular, when Frank said he would take us to a shopping mall and he dropped us off at 8.30am at a mall in the middle of nowhere. He never mentioned what time he would be back to collect us and there was no mobile phones in those days. The funny thing about it, is Frank went off to work and it was only when Kathy came home from work that she rang Frank to say where are “They” and he said ”OH NO”. He’d forgotten all about us and we were still in the middle of nowhere at the shopping mall. Anyone that knows Frank will have a laugh at that!! As we all know Frank was “A War Veteran” and took great pride in the fact that he fought for his country. He liked to mention this regularly during conversations. When we went to Vegas a couple of years ago, we were queuing at the hotel check in desk, Frank skipped the queue telling everyone as he passed he was a war veteran and went to the very top of the queue and got served before everyone else. I was very embarrassed but the people in the queue had no problem with him skipping his turn and were very proud of their war veterans. He was like the “Mayor”. Another very funny memory I have is the time we went to dinner in my brother Pat & Marie's house. Frank had a station wagon at the time with a long bench seat in the front. I travelled with Frank to Pat's house. When we were leaving at 3.00am in the morning someone had sat in the front seat of Frank's car so I decided to sit in the back. I opened the back door of the station wagon to be greeted by a tsunami of empty cans. Frank must have been collecting empty cans all his life. The cans rolled out of the station wagon and down the street, obviouly making plenty of noise on their travels. It would only take Frank!! Our most recent meeting was at my daughter’s wedding in Kinsale, Co. Cork where it was a great pleasure to spend some time with Frank before he sadly passed away. Frank as always had some jokes to tell and some Vietnam war stories for the grandchildren. I tell you something, Frank you looked brilliant that day, you didn’t look a day over 50!! and as always you were the life and soul of the party. These memories of my travelling buddy I will cherish forever. Marie & I would like to offer our deepest condolences to you Kathy, Richi, Karen, Shannon & Cian. We may be far away but as family & friends we are very close and you are always only a thought away. Lots of love, Dennis & Marie O’Leary Ballygarvan, Co. Cork Ireland
