CONDOLENCES (GuestBook)

Indiana Ministries and I send our heartfelt condolences to Rev. Greg Smith and family in the passing of Professor Smith. Though I never had him for class when I attended Anderson University, he was a recognizable fixture on campus. He had an incredible life of service to the Church of God, and his life and ministry are appreciated. May his family experience God's peace and comfort during this time of celebrating and remembering his life.

Dear Jenny and family, We are very sorry for your loss. We are thinking of you and sending you warm wishes. One thing I learned from Robert Smith and will never forget: each room in a house should have a clock, a mirror and a box of tissues. I'm grateful to him and you for this sound advice! Dear family and friends of Robert Smith, I am very grieved to learn of the passing of my beloved high school teacher. He was much loved and respected at Fairview High and his influence on the lives and careers of many, many students cannot be overestimated. He believed in our capabilities and encouraged us to do our best -- whether it was on a high school stage or anywhere else. I am so glad we kept in touch and I will always remember my visits to see him in Anderson. He is now with his God and with his dear Marilyn. Rest in peace, Mr. Smith.

My condolences to all. He had a profound, quiet, non-imposing impact on my life the two years I attended Anderson. I became a high school/college teacher of speech because of him.

To the friends and family of Robert Smith, I am so sad to hear of Robert’s passing. He was the finest teacher I have ever known, and as my friend Janice Childress has said, he influenced countless lives and careers. I became a professor of journalism and English because of him. As I learned in his Christmas newsletters, he and dear Marilyn, whom I met at several FHS reunions, have a large family, of whom they were very proud. He will be missed, but he leaves so many loving memories.

I guess it is nothing unusual to say, but it needs to be said anyway, Mr. Smith was always my favorite teacher and had such a big impact on my life, my self-confidence, my view of creativity. His encouraging words and gentle way of challenging me to exceed was transformative. I was able to experience 5 years of his guidance, because I began work with Stagecrafters in 8th grade and actually became a Thespian in 9th grade (the first to become one so young, I think - in 1961 or 1962). I am sure many, many others, both at FHS and at Anderson University have similar testimonies. Finally, as a Christian now, but not at that time, I know I was forever affected by the pre-curtain behind-the-curtain prayer Mr. Smith would offer before each production. I know now that this was one secret of his success as a teacher, mentor and role model. Thank you, Mr. Smith! Paul Lacy, FHS Class of 1965
