Obituary

HARWICH—John Greenwood 73, of Harwich, and a former longtime resident of Dedham, died Saturday, January 10, 2009 at the Epoch Senior Healthcare in Brewster following a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Patricia A. (Lavache) Greenwood for 49 years.
Born in Boston, May 3, 1935 a son of the late Oscar and Catherine (Kiely) Greenwood, he had lived in Harwich since 1999 and formerly lived in Dedham for over 50 years.
Mr. Greenwood was educated in Boston schools and was a retired firefighter for the Town of Dedham, a career that spanned for 35 years. He also maintained the fire alarm system for the town and was a licensed electrician.
He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and was stationed aboard the USS Coral Sea and the USS Intrepid.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling to Aruba, camping, working around his house, washing and waxing his truck, and always finding time to fix something.
He was a member of the Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts, the International Association of Firefighters, the Dedham Firefighters Local 1735, the National Rifle Association, Walpole Sportsman Association, a communicant of Holy Trinity Church, Harwich and a member of the morning coffee group at Dino’s Coffee Shop in Harwichport.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons John J. Greenwood and his wife Coleen of Westwood, Stephen M. Greenwood of Quincy, three daughters Karen E. Smith and her husband Barry of Bellingham, Patrice A. Mayo and her husband Joseph of Harwich and Dianne M. Oteri and her husband Sean of Franklin, four sisters Joyce Griffiths and Jane Morrissey both of Dedham, and Mary McBay and Stephanie Greenwood both of West Palm Beach, Fla.
Also surviving are seven grandchildren Catherine Greenwood, Tyler Smith, John Greenwood, Benjamin Smith, Samantha Mayo, Anthony Oteri, Jordan Oteri and many nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Paul A. Greenwood and brother of the late Michael J. Greenwood and Faith DeLaiarro.
Funeral from the George F. Doherty & Sons Wilson-Cannon Funeral Home, 456 High St. Dedham, Thurs. at 8AM. Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Dedham at 9AM. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Interment with Military Honors will follow in the family lot at Brookdale Cemetery.
Visiting hours are Wednesday, Jan. 14, from 3-8PM.
